The real answer

How long does mainland setup take?

Seven to fourteen working days with no external approval, two to three weeks for a typical LLC, four to eight for regulated activities.

The full timeline

The mainland setup timeline, stage by stage

Seven stages from an activity to your visas. Some run in parallel, so a well-prepared setup beats the sum of the steps.

  1. Activity and trade name

1 to 2 days. Reserve your name with DET. A clean name and a matching activity avoid a rejection.

  2. Initial approval

1 to 3 days. The government's no-objection, often same-day. Regulated activities take longer here.

  3. Critical stage

    MOA notarisation

1 to 3 days. The LLC's Memorandum is notarised. On the critical path, so keep it ready.

  4. Office and Ejari

2 to 5 days. Register the Ejari tenancy. Mainland requires it, and it can run in parallel.

  5. Critical stage

    Documents and license

1 to 3 days after payment. DET issues the license, sometimes same-day. Now your company can trade.

  6. Establishment registrations

2 to 5 days. Two records: the GDRFA immigration card and the MOHRE labour file. Two fee sets.

  7. Residence visas

7 to 14 days each. Entry permit, medical, Emirates ID, and stamping. Then you can hire.

What slows it

What slows a mainland setup down

The biggest risk to your timeline is not DET processing. It is your file and the approvals you need.

Documents

A missing or expired document

The most common delay by far. A single error in the file can push approval back by weeks, not days.

Do this instead: have every document current and complete before filing.

Approvals

A regulated activity

Health, education, and municipality activities need an external approval that adds 10 to 15 working days.

Do this instead: confirm your activity's approvals before you start.

Structure

A complex shareholding structure

Many partners or corporate shareholders add notarisation and attestation steps that extend the timeline.

Do this instead: keep the structure simple, or plan for the extra time.

Attestation

Foreign documents, not attested

Documents issued abroad must be attested before they are accepted, which adds days to weeks.

Do this instead: attest foreign documents early, in the country of origin.

Trade name

A name that breaks the rules

A name with restricted or religious words is rejected and must be resubmitted, adding days.

Do this instead: check the naming rules before you reserve.

Delays cost money too. An extra month of processing is an extra month of rent and a later first invoice.

    Choose Your Business Activity

    Day 1–2

Select from DET's approved activity list. Standard activities move fast; anything touching health, education, or finance flags for external approval here.

  2. 2

    Reserve Your Trade Name

    Day 1–2

Submit your preferred name through DET. Names following UAE naming conventions clear within a day; conflicts or restricted terms add a resubmission cycle.

    Get Initial Approval

    Day 2–4

DET issues a green light confirming no objection to your business, before any documents are notarised. Regulated activities may need an extra ministry sign-off here.

Draft the MOA and Any Agent Agreement

    Day 3–6

Draft and notarise the Memorandum of Association. Professional licenses needing a local service agent add an agreement to this stage.

Lease Your Office and Register Ejari

    Day 3–7

A physical office is mandatory for mainland companies. Signing the lease and registering it with Ejari usually runs in parallel with document drafting.

    Receive Your Trade License

    Day 7–14

Once approvals clear, DET issues the trade license. Regulated activities with external clearances typically run past this range, toward the 4–8 week ceiling.

Process Visas and Open a Bank Account

    1–4 weeks

Visa and bank account run after or alongside licensing, not before. Applicants from certain nationalities may need a Police Clearance Certificate under a June 2026 ICP rule, confirm your status early, since it can add weeks.

Why Mainland Setups Actually Get Delayed

The real causes, not the vague ones.

Send your activity, we run the check

We verify your trade name and activity against DET's register directly, and flag anything likely to add time before you pay a single fee.

Common delay triggers5 we catch
How we prevent it

We screen name options against DET's register before reservation, not after rejection.

How we prevent it

We check attestation status on every foreign document before submission, not after DET flags it.

How we prevent it

We confirm DHA, KHDA, Municipality, or MOHRE involvement before you commit to a timeline.

How we prevent it

We sequence tenancy and Ejari alongside document prep, not after.

How we prevent it

We prepare KYC documentation in parallel with licensing, not after the license lands.

Mainland Timeline Myths, Corrected

The misreadings that cost founders time and planning.

Myth

The whole process finishes in 5 days

Reality

Only the license can, in the best case. Visa and bank account processing run after or alongside it, adding real time.

Myth

DED still handles mainland licensing

Reality

It's been DET since 2022. The Department of Economy and Tourism replaced DED as Dubai's licensing authority.

Myth

The visa is part of the setup timeline

Reality

It's a separate, parallel process. Your license can issue in a week while visas and banking still take longer.

Myth

The 4–8 week regulated ceiling is a hard limit

Reality

Not always. A 2026 nationality-based visa screening rule can extend timelines further, independent of your business activity.

Myth

Every business activity moves at the same speed

Reality

They don't. Standard trading activities clear in days; healthcare, education, and finance can take weeks longer.

Myth

The total is the sum of the individual stages.

Reality

It is usually less. Several stages run in parallel, Ejari among them. The notarised Memorandum is the one genuinely on the critical path.

Confirm your specific activity and nationality factors before treating any range here as guaranteed.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

For a straightforward case, the trade licence is often issued within 7–14 working days once documents are ready. The full picture, including visas and a bank account, typically runs 2 to 8 weeks. Your activity, whether it is regulated, and how quickly documents come together set the real pace.
Eight, broadly: choose your activity, reserve the trade name, get initial approval, draft the MOA, lease an office and register Ejari, submit documents and pay fees, receive the trade licence, then process visas and open a bank account. The first six move quickly; visas and banking are what extend the timeline.
Trade name reservation and initial approval can happen in a day or two. The slowest parts are usually the bank account, which is a separate process banks control, and any external approval a regulated activity needs. A clean, complete document file is the single biggest thing that keeps it fast.
Sometimes. For a simple, unregulated activity with documents ready and no external approval, the trade licence can be issued in about 7–14 working days, and instant-licence routes are faster still. Regulated activities that need ministry sign-off take longer, so it depends on what you do.
Most delays come from documentation, not the government: a missing attestation, an expired passport, or an incomplete file. External approvals for regulated activities, and the bank's own onboarding checks, are the other two big factors. Prepare the file fully before filing and most delays disappear.
Yes. Visa processing and the corporate bank account come after the trade licence is issued, not before, because both depend on the company legally existing first. This is why visas and banking sit at the end of the timeline and add a few weeks after the licence itself.
It is the least predictable step, because the bank controls it. A resident applicant with a clean file often clears in a few weeks; a non-resident or complex ownership structure can take longer. The licence does not guarantee an account, so treat banking as a separate process to plan for.
Much of it, yes. A lot of the licensing process can be handled by power of attorney without you being in Dubai, though some steps, such as certain bank onboarding and visa medicals, need you in person. We confirm which parts of your specific setup require your presence.
